15|05|2016 - FITO HILLCLIMB

Brilliant overall win for Javi Villa in the Spanish Championship.

Arriondas, 15th May: Javi Villa has done it again, driving his BRC B49 the Asturian-born driver not only scored his fourth consecutive win in Category 2 of the Spanish Championship at the El Fito hillclimb but he also won overall in the national series, beating, for third time in four events, all the more powerful cars entered in Category 1.

The classic competition held at Arriondas has been a true challenge for its more than 120 entrants, with changeable weather during the whole weekend. On Saturday it rained at the beginning of the day but the timed climb, run in the afternoon, was held on an almost dry track, with just a few damp patches. Javi went for it from the start, doing a great climb to set a 2:43.358s that was the fastest both in Category 2 and overall, beating by almost 8 seconds the winner in Category 1, the 1300cc engined Demon Car driven by Joseba Iraola.

On Sunday the final practice was run on a wet track as rain had fallen in the early hours. When the second timed run started it wasn't raining anymore but the road was still damp in several places so the times were slower than the previous day so the final result would be decided on the final climb, held in sunny conditions and with a totally dry track. Javi dominated again both Category 2 and the overall standings of the Spanish Championship setting a time of 2:44.361s that was totally out of reach for his rivals, as none of them was able to go under the 2:50 mark.

With this new win Villa has now taken four victories in Category 2 of the Spanish Hillclimb Championship, which he leads comfortably. This was also his third overall win in the national series this year, with further value added to his driving at El Fito, where he has been able to beat once again cars with double the power of his less then 180bhp BRC B49.

The Fito hillclimb marked the closing of the first half of the season in the Spanish Championship, which now takes a long break as what should have been its next date, the Valle de Laciana hillclimb, has been cancelled. However, neither Javi not his team will relax until July for the Alp hillclimb, now the next round of the championship, as they are entering some events of the North Open hillclimb with the new BRC built according to the specifications of the CM+ group.

Javi Villa's own words: "El Fito has been a perfect weekend for us. Yesterday we beat the CM record, scoring a 43. Today it started as a tough day, with some rain, but then the sun shone, the road dried up and we set a 44 in the final climb to win Category 2 and also take the best time overall in the Spanish Championship. In four rounds we've won overall three times so it has been quite a good first half of the season. Now it's time for a change with the CM plus in the Open to test a new type of car."
