Eighth position for Javi Villa in the first of the Brands Hatch races.
Brands Hatch, 8th June 2013: Javi Villa could only finish eighth in a messy NASCAR European race held this today at Brands Hatch. The race has to be twice run under the Safety Car which, together with the difficulty, of overtaking on the narrow 'Indy' version of the British track greatly limited Javi's chances who, despite having a good race pace, setting the fourth fastest lap, just a tenth away from the quickest, was badly affected by the fights produced after each restart.

The day begun with the qualifying session, run early in the morning. This session was very close and where, as expected following yesterday's free practice, last year laptimes where greatly improved upon. Villa was more than a second faster, finishing with the fourth best time, less than four tenths away from pole position. This left him on the less advantageous side of the grid, on the outside and dirty side of the track for the start of the first race of the weekend, run a couple of hours later.

At the start, Javi was cautious, keeping his fourth position until he make a little mistake that allowed Iannetta to get by. Soon after that there was the first Safety Car intervention, to clear debris on the track from the usual incidents in the opening laps. The race was restarted on lap 14, loosing Villa a place to Zimmer, with whom he was fighting during the next few laps until it was necessary to call the Safety Car again, this time because of an incident caused by one of the drivers fighting in the middle of the group. Situated once again on the outside, Javi couldn't avoid losing another position at the restart, being overtaken by the Briton Wright, who was very motivated at his home race.

In the following laps there was a close fight for fifth position between Villa, Wright and Nordström, the three running very close and ended up hampering each other to the benefit of Gandon and Rocca, which relegated Javi to the ninth position where he crossed the finish line, gaining a place in the final results as Ianetta, who had finished ahead, received a 30 seconds penalty.

Tomorrow, Sunday, the second race of the weekend will take place at 12:45 GMT, with Javi starting from the second row of the grid and aiming to improve todays result with his main target to finish the weekend on the Brands Hatch podium.

Javier Villa: "We had good pace, in fact our best lap is just a tenth slower than the fastest lap and we have been improving in each session, from free practice to qualifying and the race. But this one has been hard, I didn't make the best use of the safety cars, which always put me in bad position and I was duly hampered. I finished eight and at least I scored some points and finished the race, which was important after the bad beginning of the season. Tomorrow I am starting fourth and I hope, at least, to close the weekend on the podium."
